Trockene Haut trotz Creme? Der wahre Grund, den kaum jemand kennt

Dry skin despite moisturizer? The real reason hardly anyone knows

What really happens with dry skin?

Dry skin is not a sign of neglect. It occurs when the skin's protective barrier – the so-called hydrolipid film – becomes imbalanced. This barrier consists of lipids, ceramides, and natural moisturizing factors. If this balance is disturbed, the skin struggles to retain moisture – leading to a change in skin feel: The skin feels tight, rough, and reacts more sensitively to external influences.

The most common causes – and the one you've overlooked

Dry skin can have many causes – both internal and external. Leading dermatologists distinguish between:

External (exogenous) factors:

  • Cold outdoor air and dry heating air in winter
  • Hot shower water that strips lipids from the skin
  • UV radiation that can damage the skin barrier long-term
  • Aggressive cleansing products with sulfates

Internal (endogenous) factors:

  • Hormonal changes (menopause, pregnancy)
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Skin conditions like neurodermatitis or psoriasis
  • Stress and lack of sleep due to elevated cortisol levels

But there's another factor that is particularly common in Germany and yet often overlooked: hard tap water.

Hard water in Germany – figures that will surprise you

Germany has one of the highest quality drinking water systems in the world. But quality doesn't always mean skin compatibility. According to an analysis by water treatment specialist Aqon Pure, which analyzed data from thousands of German water suppliers, around 40% of buildings in Germany are supplied with hard tap water.

Another source shows an even clearer picture: Approximately 75 percent of German households have hard water coming from their taps (Source: Ecowater Deutschland).

The hardest values are found in major German cities:

  • Berlin: up to 23.9 °dH
  • Frankfurt am Main: up to 19.7 °dH
  • Munich: up to 19.0 °dH
  • Cologne: over 14 °dH (officially "hard")

Above 14 °dH (degrees of German hardness), water is officially considered hard. For comparison: In Schloßkulm, Thuringia, the value is 46.53 °dH – more than three times the limit (Source: Aqon Pure, 2024

What does hard water do to your skin? The science behind it

Hard water contains high concentrations of calcium and magnesium ions. Scientific studies describe several ways in which these minerals can affect the skin's feel:

1. Alteration of the acid mantle The skin has a natural pH value of approximately 4.5–5.5 (slightly acidic). Hard water, however, is alkaline. Regular washing with alkaline water can influence this pH value and disturb the natural balance of the acid mantle.

2. Surfactant residues on the skin A study by the University of Sheffield (Journal of Investigative Dermatology, 2017) examined 80 subjects. The result: Skin washed with hard water showed increased deposits of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) – a common cleansing agent. These residues led to an altered skin reaction after washing, especially for sensitive skin.

3. Influence on the natural balance of the skin A review (PubMed, 2018: Skin Barrier and Calcium) describes that external calcium from hard water can influence the natural balance of the skin – especially for already compromised skin.

4. Connection with sensitive skin A systematic review with meta-analysis (Clinical & Experimental Allergy, 2020) evaluated data from 385,901 participants from 7 studies. The results suggest a connection between hard water and skin feel, especially in people with sensitive skin.

Hard water and skin – scientific connections explained

A recent UK Biobank study (2025) with approximately 486,000 adults over 14 years old investigated the connection between water hardness and skin reactions in different regions.
